Description
Neomycin/Polyb/Dex Ophthalmic Ointment, 3.5 g, is a combination antibiotic and corticosteroid used for the treatment of ocular infections and inflammatory conditions. The active ingredients include neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate, and dexamethasone. Neomycin and polymyxin B act as broad-spectrum antibiotics, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and disrupting bacterial cell membranes. Dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid, suppresses the inflammatory response and reduces swelling, redness, and irritation.
This ophthalmic ointment is indicated for use in bacterial eye infections, including blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis, where inflammation and bacterial proliferation occur simultaneously. The antimicrobial agents target susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, preventing further infection. Dexamethasone provides rapid anti-inflammatory effects, minimizing discomfort and tissue damage caused by inflammation.
Application involves placing a small amount inside the lower eyelid as prescribed. Patients should avoid touching the applicator tip to prevent contamination. Contact lenses should not be worn during treatment. Extended use may increase the risk of secondary infections, elevated intraocular pressure, or cataract formation.
